The crystal structure of a conformationally flexible molecule may be influenced by several factors, especially by crystal-packing effects. They have to be taken into consideration in crystal-structure examinations. In our case the directing influence of the included solvent molecule seems to be dominant, as we observed the same effect in various cyclophanes (see ref. 13); F. Vögtle et al., unpublished results.

Definition of distances: height: distance between the tosylaza bridges (centre of a fictive connection line between the two nitrogen atoms) and the phenyl-phenyl bond of the opposite biphenyl; width bottom: distance between the two opposite biphenyls (centre phenyl-phenyl bond); width top: distance between two opposite sulfur bridges (centre of a fictive connection line between two sulfur atoms on each side).
