+ in panel d. For example, if m/z = 97 in panel d were 15% of m/z = 98, then 15% of the m/z = 98 signal of panel c should be subtracted from the m/z = 97 signal of panel c. This approach was tried and found to be unsatisfactory because the fragmentation ratio (m/z = 97):(m/z = 98) from HOBr was not stable and in some cases its use led to negative values of [BrO]. In contrast, the intensity of m/z = 97 was always greater in panel c than in panel b, so that values of [BrO] derived as explained in the text were always positive and credible.
