Elemental analysis of the polyurethanes revealed very low levels of phosphorus and sulfur (P 0.09-0.54%; S 0.02-0.13%) - these values were far less than predicted for these polymers if intact 1,2,4-dithiazolidine-3,5-dione moieties at the polymer chain ends and excess triphenylphosphine were present. It is proposed that the residual phosphorus and sulfur content in these polymer samples was derived from trace quantities of triphenylphosphine sulfide, triphenylphosphine oxide or unreacted triphenylphosphine and these by-products/reagent are present in acceptably low concentrations.
