    • The use of chloroform that has not been rigorously dried or contains ethanol gives lower yields of the [2]catenane and, more problematically, produces byproducts arising from the partial hydrolysis of the starting acid chloride. These are not removed in the above workup procedure. However, in this case the [2]catenane can be obtained pure by carefully washing the end product with cold chloroform.
