Strictly speaking, the initial conformation formed in the experiments with chains built from a finite number of segments is not a catenary curve. We can understand that this is the case by considering the conformation of a chain built from an odd number of segments whose ends are fixed to points located at the same level and separated in the horizontal direction by the length of a single segment. In this case, the initial conformation consists of two exactly vertical pieces. This conformation was used by Schagerl in his laboratory experiments.
