Do acute diffusion- and perfusionweighted MRI lesions identify final infarct volume in ischemic stroke?
-
Rivers CS, Wardlaw JM, Armitage PA, et al. Do acute diffusion- and perfusionweighted MRI lesions identify final infarct volume in ischemic stroke? Stroke 2006; 37:98-104. This study highlights the difficulty of using MR parameters to define tissue outcome, and shows that tissue without evidence of a so-called perfusion diffusion mismatch is also at risk of infarction.

-
Marmarou A, Signoretti S, Fatouros P, et al. Mitochondrial injury measured by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in severe head trauma patients. Acta Neurochir Suppl 2005; 95:149-151. An interesting study that demonstrates that neuronal injury as defined by a reduction in NAA takes several days to develop. Recovery of NAA is consistent with reversible mitochondrial impairment, while sustained reductions are predictive of poor outcome.
