    • Evaporation is slowed by a minute recession of the air/water interface into the bulk of the sample. Because the pore size is much smaller than the mean free path of water vapor, the transport of vapor through the pore space is in the Knudsen limit where the diffusion coefficient is significantly reduced. Thus, even the slowest evaporation rates observed in this experiment can be obtained with a recession of the air/water interface of less than 100 μm.
