Expression of muscarinic and adrenergic receptors in the normal human conjunctival epithelium
-
Enríquez de Salamanca A, Siemasko KF, Diebold Y, et al. Expression of muscarinic and adrenergic receptors in the normal human conjunctival epithelium. Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci 2005; 46:504-513. This article describes the presence of muscarinic and adrenergic receptor subtypes in the IOBA-NHC human conjunctival epithelial cell line, and the modulation of their expression under proinflammatory conditions. Alteration in several neuroreceptors expression is found under in-vitro inflammatory conditions, adding further support for a neurogenic mediation in some inflammation-mediated diseases.

Altered expression of neurotransmitter receptors and neuromediators in vernal keratoconjunctivitis
-

The expression of several neurotransmitter receptors and neuromediators is studied in conjunctival biopsies of VKC patients and it is found to be altered both in the epithelium and stroma. This alteration may be correlated to the altered mucus expression observed in those patients. Pharmacological approaches that regulate expression and/or receptors and neuromediators may have therapeutic value.
