3 and CsOTs) of weak acids—particularly when they are dissolved in a dipolar aprotic solvent like DMF—exhibit some quite remarkable reactivity characteristics that render them extremely useful for synthetic purposes. Besides relating to the enhanced alkylation of nucleophiles, the “cesium effect”, as it has been dubbed, refers to the rather spectacular observation that intermolecular substitutions are generally suppressed relative to intramolecular ones.

It has been found (, unpublished results) that the alkylations of phenols with halogeno compounds, including chlorohydrins are accelerated significantly by the addition of phase‐transfer catalysts, such as Bu4NI, in basic media. The base‐promoted dialkylation of diphenol 1 with ditosylate 2 is probably also subject to the same kind of phase‐transfer catalysis.
