The degree of concentration is defined as the increase in the energy flow density (here the direct radiation of the sun) passing through an aperture of given area (see ref. [2a]). For parabolic trough collectors, a good representation of the light concentration is given by the ratio of the width of the parabolic mirror to the inside diameter of the absorber tube multiplied by the photoreactor efficiency.

The reflective material was aluminum foil formed by vapor deposition on Hostaflon, the back surface of which was sealed to polyester film and fixed by adhesive to a carrier structure. The reflectivity of the the foil at a half aperture angle of 43.6 mrad and a wavelength of 600 nm was 79%. The half aperture angle is given by the geometry of the mirror and absorber tube. Scattered light within this half aperture angle still impinges on the inside diameter of the absorber tube and hence on the reaction solution.
