The curves of Fig. 4 for the case of earthquakes can be obtained as follows: We first generate, for each b value, artificial data that obey the Gutenberg-Richter relation N (>m)∞ 10-bm above a certain magnitude threshold (e.g., m≥0). This was repeated for various b values by keeping the total number (500 000) of events constant (which implies that when changing the b value, the maximum magnitude mmax involved in the calculation also changes). These data were subsequently analyzed in natural time, for each b value, with the procedure described in the text as well as in P. Varotsos, Proc. Jpn. Acad., Ser. B: Phys. Biol. Sci. PJABDW 0386-2208 80, 429 (2004).
