Established by a resolution of the UN General Assembly in 1983, the World Commission on Environment and Development is often referred to as the "Brundtland Commission" after Gro Harlem Brundtland, then Opposition Leader and later Prime Minister of Norway, who was Chairman of the Commission, which included 22 leaders from every region of the world (14 from the South and 8 from the North).
