STEM analyses showed the mean sizes of the Pd and Au cluster cores of 1b and 2b were ca. 1.4-1.5 nm. Accordingly, LDI-MS spectroscopy, which has been reported to give average core mass (T. G. Schaaff, Anal. Chem. 2004, 76, 6187), showed peaks at ca. 6,500 (n ≈ 60) and ca. 11,000 (n ≈ 55) for 1b and 2b, respectively. MALDI-MS spectra of 1b and 2b showed peaks at ca. 15,000 and ca. 18,000, respectively, which are roughly similar to the expected molecular mass.
