Recall that the Cava data had one point not on a straight line (which supported the notion that the superconductivity was in the cuprate planes), while the original Jorgensen data had none, within experimental error, and so offered no proof that the cuprate planes superconduct. By switching from his own data (which offered no proof that the superconductivity occurred in the cuprate planes) to the Cava data (which offered a one-datum proof), he helped direct the field to cuprate-plane superconductivity.

However, these data can also be reconciled with superconductivity in the crinkled cuprate planes. Before overinterpreting these results as strong evidence for any model, one should realize that the surface can be different from the bulk, and scanning tunneling microscopy data are notoriously difficult to interpret, even under the best of circumstances.
