    • Eros once again limb-loosener whirls me sweetbitter, impossible to fight off, creature stealing up (cited in Ann Carson, Eros: the Bittersweet (Princeton: Princeton Uni- versity Press, 1986) 'Limb-loosener': this metaphor was common in Greek writing about desire and signalled the unwelcome yet irresistible unbinding of the defended self which desire entailed. In short, a fascination with the way desire undermines rather than confirms identity goes back at least this far.
