The authors stress the importance of early nutritional support and the optimization of protein administration using a hypocaloric, high-protein regimen. Twenty-four patients not amenable to standard anticancer treatment secondary to cachexia were randomized to receive fish oil, melatonin or a combination of both. The study supported the added benefit of melatonin especially when combined with fish oil.

A randomized placebo-controlled trial of 33 patients with cachexia secondary to advanced pancreatic cancer.
