Elamin EM. Nutritional care of the obese intensive care unit patient. Curr Opin Crit Care 2005; 11:300-303. A through review of metabolic changes in critically ill obese patients that includes recommendations for optimizing nutritional support in this patient population. The authors stress the importance of early nutritional support and the optimization of protein administration using a hypocaloric, high-protein regimen. The authors also recommend the use of adjusted body weight for calculating energy expenditure.
