    • Under the conditions used to form the complexes, N-phenylmaleimide (9) was hydrolyzed to N-phenylmaleamic acid as a result of the extra lability of the C-N amide bond. In the phase-transfer process, no products from hydrolysis were detected. The nucleophilic addition of 2 is evidently much faster than the competing hydrolysis.
