4. The color due to the intermediary diphenyl-methyl cation was not observed for the reaction mixture throughout the polymerization. It is likely that the intermediate should be immediately trapped with the hydroxy group to form the ether linkage. As mentioned in ref. 1, the thermogravimetry/differential thermal analysis profiles of the mixture of DL-1,3-BHPMB and CSA (5 mol %) showed an endothermic peak together with a reasonable weight loss, which was assignable to the vaporization of the water generated by the polycondenaation, at 135 °C. However, the possibility that the reaction accompanied melting, which was not observed at all macroscopically, could not be excluded. Therefore, we performed this microscopy study.
