    • 3D closely packed structure may exhibit three positions of the hexagonal layers usually denoted as A, B, and C. In this structure, any two adjacent layers have different combinations of the three positions. A periodic alternation of the layers in the sequence ABCABC ... is characteristic of the fcc lattice and the sequence ABABAB ... corresponds to the hcp lattice. Generally, a random combination of layers, for example, ... ABACBACA ..., is responsible for a 3D closely packed structure disordered along the normal to these layers.
