    • The Herald of the Union, a federally run Wilmington newspaper that first appeared on 28 February 1865, likewise reported on the pitiful condition of the released prisoners. The paper says little about the subsequent epidemic, although there are references to military orders regarding street-cleaning crews, and demands that homeowners clean up their grounds, which suggests that the tool of sanitation was being brought to bear against an epidemic enemy. See editions of 2 March, 13 March, 17 March, 21 March, and 1 April 1865.
