    • With the HMDS method, 2,3-diphenylmaleonitrile (3) directly tetramerizes to the corresponding porphyrazine. The direct conversion was not possible in Mg-propoxide method, where the maleonitrile was first converted to the pyrrolinediimine before tetramerization.
