    • The variation of Schrödinger's energy functional is equivalent to the constrained variation of the quantum action integral for a stationary state. In the usual application of the principle of least action, the variation in the action is set equal to zero to obtain the Euler equation, the system's equation of motion. As generalized by Schwinger in his principle of stationary action, the variation in the action no longer vanishes but instead the variation determines the action of generators on the temporal and spatial boundaries of the system. Thus as Schwinger makes clear, the requirement of the principle of least action that the variation vanish must be discarded and the concept of stationarity in the action must be broadened to include the contributions from generator acting on the boundary of the system.
