    • We have recently found that the reaction occurs much more slowly if carried out in total darkness (ca. two days instead of 90 min to reach the reversible orange-red stage). The most likely photocatalytic reaction is photoreduction of selenosulphate to selenide ions by photogenerated electrons in CdSe. Since the phenomenon we describe here occurs for precipitates prepared both under illumination and in the dark, we do not consider it further in this paper.
