note
-
In South Africa, 5.2 million people are HIV positive. In about 500,000 of these, destruction of the immune system by HIV has progressed to the point that ARV treatment is required (CD4 counts below 200). Currently, about 40,000 people are receiving ARV treatment in the public sector (about 8,000 through MSF) and another 45,000 in the private sector.
