ITARDA and the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association cooperatively investigated human errors in road accidents and evaluated the effects of 13 vehicle safety systems that are already available commercially and those which will be available in the near future, such as rear-end collision alarms, lane keeping systems, night view systems, etc. Investigators reviewed microdata from approximately 600 accidents, consisting of the detailed situations of each accident including the interview record of the persons who caused each accident and they extracted the human errors that affected each accident. Additionally, they judged whether these 13 systems would have effectively prevented each accident if each vehicle had been equipped with these systems. They then examined the relationships between human error and the effects of these systems
