Scott A. Smithq31is currently pursing his research interests in a PhD program in the Department of Biology at McGill University, where he is studying the nature of invasion and its impacts on community structure, as well as the effects of human modification of the environment on the functioning of ecological systems. The research for this paper was conducted during the completion of Scott's Master's degree under the auspices of the Neotropical Environment Option (NEO), and was carried out jointly at the Department of Biology of McGill University and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Eldredge Bermingham is a senior staff scientist and Deputy Director of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute where he pursues his research interests in the historical biogeography and molecular systematics of neotropical fishes, Caribbean island birds, as well as a suite of other taxa.
