    • note
    • The study sample does not include data from male spouses and female spouses without children because of the low numbers of males who responded to Survey of Army Families IV (SAF IV) and because the researchers wanted to study coping as including the affects of daily parenting.

    • note
    • When looking at the positive and negative impact of a variable on the Daily Coping Scale (DCS), it is important to note the direction of the Likert item and how the question was asked. Lower scores on the DCS indicate better coping. Thus, if the Likert item's categories ranges from strongly agree to strongly disagree, one is likely to have a positive association with DCS because "strongly agree" was coded with a lower value than "strongly disagree" on the survey.

    • note
    • Stepwise regression was used instead of hierarchical regression because the researchers did not want to impose a theoretical model on the data but rather to allow the statistical procedures to determine the model. It was also decided to use a one-step stepwise regression model rather than a multistep step-wise regression to allow all variables an equal opportunity to enter the final regression model. A multistep regression model that allows for entering status variables (such as age and education) first would have reduced the opportunity of other variables to enter the model due to shared variance. Follow-up studies based on a theoretical model might consider using a multistep stepwise model.
