The standard RK4 algorithm is used for most results reported here. For the integration step sizes used, the Hamiltonian structure of the system dynamics is reasonably well preserved during our simulations. This fact is partially evident from the symmetry of the Lyapunov spectrum (see, e.g., Fig. 1). The simulations for the case of the FPU- β model have been checked with the symplectic version of RK4 proposed by J. M. Sanz-serva and M. P. Calvo, Numerical Hamiltonian Problems (Chapman and Hall, London, 1994).
