    • The ring of life provides evidence for a genome fusion origin of eukaryotes
    • A new comparative genomics method is proposed to distinguish between genomic fusion and piecemeal horizontal acquisition of bacterial genes by emerging eukaryotic cells. It is concluded that eukaryotes evolve as a result of fusion between an archaeon and a bacterium, probably a photosynthetic one. The metaphor of a 'ring of life' is introduced as a replacement for 'tree of life', to acknowledge the pivotal role of genome fusion.

Previous studies indicated, perhaps unexpectedly, that, although SWI2/SNF2 ATPases have a superfamily-2 helicase domain, they only have DNA-dependent and not helicase activity. This paper presents a model of the archaeal SWI2/SNF2 ATPase traveling along the minor groove of double-stranded DNA without strand separation.
