    • In the hybrid method with the time step h, the Langevin time step Δ τL= h2 and the microcanonical time step Δ τMC=h. In order to ensure the ergodicity the condition Δ τLN >> 1, with N the number of times that the random noise is applied to the system, should be satisfied. This practically requires a huge number N> 105 for a time step h=0.01 chosen conventionally. This does not seem to be met in the simulations using the hybrid method presented so far (Ref. 7).

    • The extrapolated value of the Wilson loop agrees with that calculated by a different algorithm of Ref. 23 on 63times 16 lattice with the antiperiodic boundary condition. The agreement is within 1–2% accuracy for any size L of the loop except at large L which suffers from large statistical errors. We acknowledge Philippe de Forcrand for providing the data.
