Flexible titanium nailing for the treatment of the unstable pediatric tibial fracture
-
O'Brien T, Weisman DS, Ronchetti P, et al. Flexible titanium nailing for the treatment of the unstable pediatric tibial fracture. J Pediatr Orthop 2004; 24:601-609. This is a retrospective review of the use of flexible nailing for the treatment of pediatric tibia fractures. The authors' results indicate that flexible nails are an effective treatment option for unstable tibia fractures in the pediatric patient. Lower infection and refracture rates along with an aesthetically pleasing scar are some of the advantages over other treatment options.

Operative treatment of tibial fractures in children: Are elastic nails an improvement over external fixation?
-
Kubiak EN, Egol KA, Scher D, et al. Operative treatment of tibial fractures in children: are elastic nails an improvement over external fixation? J Bone Joint Surg Am 2005; 87A:1761-1768. This is a retrospective review comparing the flexible intramedullary nails vs external fixation for the treatment of pediatric tibia fractures. The results indicate improved functional outcomes and shorter time to union for the flexible nail group. The authors conclude that when operative stabilization is necessary, the preferred method of fixation is flexible nails
