This paper highlights the importance of psychological processes as major determinants of the cortisol stress response.

J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2004; 89:565-573. This is the first study reporting the possible impact of glucocorticoid receptor gene polymorphisms on psychosocial stress responses of the HPA axis, thus highlighting the usefulness of behavioral genetics in behavioral medicine.

Psychoneuroendocrinology 2005. September 22 [Epub ahead of print]. This study reports that cognitive behavioral stress management reduces cortisol responses to stress in men and women 4 months after the termination of the training in healthy subjects.
11. Abelson JL, Liberzon I, Young EA, et al. Cognitive modulation of the endocrine stress response to a pharmacological challenge in normal and panic disorder subjects. Arch Gen Psychiatry 2005; 62:668-675. In this study, the authors used a pharmacological stimulation test to induce HPA axis activation in their participants. Some of the participants received a short cognitive intervention beforehand, which led to decreases in HPA axis response to the pharmacological stimulation.

This is an elegant study showing that stress and stress-related cortisol levels have an important influence on wound healing.

In this study, using brain scanning techniques, the researchers have located a specific part of the brain that causes people with asthma to wheeze and gasp for breath when they are under emotional stress.

The authors found that their brief intervention was successful in reducing the hypochondriasis symptoms in the long run.
