This study emphasizes the importance of long-term follow-up of patients. With shorter follow-up of 5 years, a U-shaped relationship between ambulatory systolic blood pressure and survival was seen in this community-based study of people with essential hypertension. With 11 year follow-up, a J-shaped relationship was seen. Nighttime blood pressure was a stronger marker of outcomes than daytime blood pressure.
