    • DiMasi et al. (36) estimate the average "out of pocket" costs of bringing a drug to market were $403 million in US dollars (in 2000 dollars). Capitalizing the cost with a real discount rate of 11% ["the expected return that investors forego during development when they invest in pharmaceutical R & D instead of an equally risky portfolio of financial securities" (36, p. 161) - the "cost-of-capital"] brought the total to $802 million in US dollars, and when postapproval research and development is included the estimated total was $897 million. The average approval date for drugs in the study was 1997. The authors estimated that if a drug was approved by 2001, the preapproval capitalized cost would be $1.1 thousand million, and for research and development initiated in 2001, the total capitalized costs given approval after 12 y would be $1.9 thousand million

    • Our primary resource was an online journal database maintained by the American Chemical Society (http://pubs.acs.org/journals/query/subscriberSearch. jsp), which we searched with the terms "marine," "collection, " and "secondary collection." Other databases, such as EMBASE (Excerpta Medica database), or search engines such as Google, revealed little information. Comparatively few articles reported wet weights, with many giving freeze-dried, frozen, or extracted amounts in the experimental section. The dearth of data, combined with the excessive influence of a few reports on very large collections, eliminated the possibility of making any meaningful assessment of the claimed decreasing temporal trends in (re)collection sizes. Previous studies have also found that researchers seldom report collected sizes and usually nothing about natural abundance within the collection area (24). The few published sample size data were usually associated with the discovery and description of a novel compound, with little information about the entire primary collection procedures or ongoing collections for the development of "lead" compounds.
