    • Air at room temperature and atmospheric pressure actually behaves as an ideal gas; the van der Waals constants for air [see A. Roth, Vacuum Technology (North Holland, Amsterdam, 1976)] are such that the effective pressure and volume in those conditions differ from those of an ideal gas by less than 0.27% and 0.16%, respectively. Moreover, according to the procedure described, the final state of the test gas is more or less identical to the initial state; the pressure is indeed the same and the final volume is undeniably very close to the initial one. (The overall process practically corresponds to a partial displacement of the test gas from the cylinder to the unknown volume.) Should any correction to pressure and volume be introduced, in order to account for the gas not being ideal, this would be almost the same in both the initial and final states, so that it would not significantly affect the volume determination.
