The comparisons have been obtained by using the OSIRIS particle-in-cell simulation framework [R.A. Fonseca, in Lect. Notes Comp. Sci. Vol. 2331 (Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg, 2002), p. 342]. In the code, a set of computational particles is moved under the action of their self-consistent electromagnetic field and any externally applied field: this is done by first depositing the current density on a spatial grid, then solving Maxwell's equations on the same grid and computing the force accelerating each particle, by interpolation of the field values on the position of the point particles.
