In a recent report of the U.S. Department of Energy it is pointed out how in the U.S. 20%, and worldwide 10%-15%, of the total production of electricity is consumed for operation of lighting systems (OIDA Report, August 2002). It appears clear how for a sustainable economy and for environmental aspects a worldwide priority is to reduce the energy consumed for general illumination. It is also clear how the major enabler of energy conservation will be a new lighting technology such as solid-state lighting.
