    • Integrating high-throughput and computational data elucidates bacterial networks
    • This paper describes an excellent example of the research approaches taken in systems biology. After generating a genome-scale model of Escherichia coli biochemical pathways, Palsson and his group made predictions regarding the phenotypes of biochemical mutants. These predictions led to hypotheses that were tested by examining the phenotype experimentally and, if necessary, the model was adjusted to account for discrepancies with empirical observations. The improved model was then used to predict further biochemical phenotypes, which were also investigated experimentally, thus resulting in an iterative process of mathematical modeling, hypothesis testing and model optimization.
