This highly influential series as promoted by The World Health Organization provides standardized international nomenclature for classification of tumors of the head and neck including salivary gland tumors. It presents relevant histogenetic, pathogenetic, clinicopathologic, and genetic information on these entities.

Relative accuracy of fine-needle aspiration and frozen section in the diagnosis of lesions of the parotid gland
-
Seethala RR. LiVolsi VA, Baloch ZW. Relative accuracy of fine-needle aspiration and frozen section in the diagnosis of lesions of the parotid gland. Head Neck 2005; 27:217-223. Many studies have assessed the accuracy of FNA and frozen-section histopathology as separate diagnostic modalities, but this study is one of just a few to provide a direct comparison of these two techniques in a large cohort of patients with parotid masses.

-
Balakrishnan K, Castling B, McMahon J, et al. Fine needle aspiration cytology in the management of a parotid mass: a two centre retrospective study. Surgeon 2005; 3:67-72. This two-center study evaluates sensitivity and specificity rates for diagnosing malignancy in parotid masses assessed by FNA. The low sensitivity rates underscore the problem of this technique in recognizing parotid carcinomas.

Hughes JH, Volk EE, Wilbur DC. Pitfalls in salivary gland fine-needle aspiration cytology: lessons from the College of American Pathologists Interlaboratory Comparison Program in Nongynecologic Cytology. Arch Pathol Lab Med 2005; 129:26-31. A large study assessing the diagnostic accuracy of participating pathologist who evaluated reference aspiration cytology specimens of salivary gland tumors distributed by the College of American Pathologists. This study is very helpful in identifying those salivary gland tumors most highly associated with false-positive and false-negative diagnoses.

-
Kim YH, Jeong WJ, Jung KY, et al. Diagnosis of major salivary gland tuberculosis: Experience of eight cases and review of the literature. Acta Otolaryngol 2005; 125:1318-1322. This study points out the value of FNA as a tool for diagnosing infectious processes involving the parotid gland. In doing so, it points to the growing application of molecular genetic techniques to aspiration specimens.
