29. Attempts to reproduce this quench were often met with difficulty. Usually the PXRD pattern of the product was observed to contain a small amount of the α phase in addition to the β phase.
30. The sample, which was stored in the desiccator, was periodically exposed to ambient conditions for short amounts of time while its PXRD pattern was being obtained. Therefore, we cannot determine with certainty whether the desiccated sample would have undergone the transition in the complete absence of moisture.
