38. Fares Fair was a policy pursued by the Greater London Council to significantly reduce the cost of using public transport. It was abandoned following a legal challenge from the London Borough of Bromley, which argued that, as no Underground lines ran through the Borough, its rate payers should not be required to subsidise cheap Underground travel.

46. Depreciation is the process whereby money is set aside in each year, to provide for replacement of assets when they become life-expired. Under accounting practice in Britain this is generally based on the historic value of assets, and thus does not generate sufficient funds to purchase equivalent assets at current prices.
