    • Quoting from the original Ribbert paper: "... dass jede normale Zelle vermehrungsfaehig ist, dass sie aber diese ihr innewohnende Eigenschaft nicht oder nicht in vollem Maasse zur Geltung bringen kann, weil sie als Theil eines organischen Ganzen sich den Gesetzen desselben fuegt, weil innerhalb der einzelnen Gewebe und Organe eine gegenseitige Beeinflussung der Bestandtheile, eine Spannung besteht, welche eine dauernde und ueber die den einzelnen Zellarten physiologisch zukommende Vermehrung hinausgehende Proliferation ausschliesst." From: Ribbert H. "Zur Entstehung der Geschwuelste", Deutsche Medizinische Wochenzeitschrift, 23 Juli 1896, Vol 30, pp 471-474 (text quoted from page 473). In the English translation by Silva Krause: "...every normal cell is able to proliferate but may not be able to fulfill this ability or fulfill it just in part due to the fact that it is part of a whole, the organism. Therefore, the cell follows the laws of this "whole" because within each tissue and organ there is an interdependent interaction, a so-called "tension/strain". This prevents a constitutive and great excess of physiologically appropriate proliferation for each cell type."
