    • In the two dimensional materials, the density of states increases with the energy in a stepwise manner when crossing the energy levels of the states. Since tunneling spectroscopy selectively probes states with a small lateral wave number component, each confined state appears as a peak in the tunneling spectra. Peaks in the tunneling spectrum thus indicate an increase of the density of states above the energy level.
