    • The choice of a hexagon over, say, an octagon, which reflects more the underlying d-wave symmetry, is motivated by the following considerations. By aligning one of the faces of the hexagon perpendicular to the a or b axis, we can estimate the s-wave component of the pair critical current as the d-wave component is zero. Furthermore, if the wave function is pure d wave, then removing these two faces has no effect on the critical current providing dramatic evidence of the underlying symmetry. Finally, the amplitude of the wave function for the remaining four faces is a substantial value of the peak amplitude thus providing for an (experimentally) easy measurement of the pair current associated with pure d-wave symmetry.
