    • This article draws on the findings of the research project Remittances towards the Promotion of Local Development. Two Case Studies in Morocco and Tunisia', coordinated by the Federico Caffè Centre and co-financed by the European Union under the Femise Network Research Programme, contract FEM-21-08. The preliminary findings were presented at the Femise Network Conference, Marseilles, 4-6 of December 2003 and at the '12th Annual Conference' of the Cuban Centre for European Studies, Havana, 28 September to 1 October 2004. I acknowledge the contribution of the other members of the research team and in particular Ninna Nyberg Sørensen, Bruno Amoroso, Diana Hunt, Marco Zupi, Alberto Mazzali, Chadia Arab and Francesco Slaviero for their invaluable support of the research. I am also grateful to an anonymous referee for the precious comments on the final draft. Any omissions, errors and opinions reflected in this article are entirely mine

    • The above-mentioned figures do not include the transfers through informal channels, such as hand carrying by friends and family members and in-kind contributions. Money that enters the country through unofficial channels is very often quite significant in the majority of countries, ranging between 10 and 50 per cent of the officially recorded figures on remittances. Very little effort is given to attempts to estimate the volume of unofficial remittances, and very often these estimates do not reflect the real picture.
