8. A new classification scheme, the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), officially replaced the SIC system in the U.S. effective January 1, 1997, but most publishers have not yet introduced the new scheme in their business sources.
9. EDGAR, an Internet-based service provided by the SEC, only contains data back to May of 1996, with some exceptions. The SEC did not require electronic filing prior to this date.
