    • Near Hc2 the situation is different: the major contribution comes from the fluctuating order parameter modulus:

    • Magnetization measurements on aligned polycrystals, Ref. 10, may underestimate γ since even a small misalignment suppresses the apparent anisotropy. The information available for similar compounds indicates very high values of γ. Torque data on a single crystal Tl 2212 [, ] yield γ approx 300 as a lower bound., 69, 2276, have shown that the original estimate of γ approx 55 for Bi 2212 is probably an underestimate. The two dimensional scaling of the M(H,T) data on Bi 2223 at high temperatures, Ref. 2, suggests a large γ in this material as well. The latter has the same crystal structure as Tl 2223, so that one expects γ to be large in our case., J. C. Martinez et al., Phys. Rev. Lett.

    • The measured field cooled magnetization of the powder, from which the sample was made, determines 4π M(1-N)= 8G at 6 K. Corrected for the randomness, this yields about 16 G for H parallel hat c. The NMR shift we report is about 100 G. Then at low T's, one can set B simeq Happl; this may result in an underestimate of λab(0), but will not change the low temperature behavior. The procedure may not be justifiable at high T's, where B-Happl may be of the same order as the shifts. However, it is the low temperatures which concern us most.

    • We take this value for λab(0) as a representative of literature values: 1100 AA, Ref. 7, 1730 AA, Ref. 10, and 1960 AA [, ]. The conclusion on the importance of fluctuations remains valid whichever of these values is chosen.
