    • The Cu(Be) metal foil was cut from a dynode of an old electron multiplier (Balzers). The Be bulk concentration (about ∼3% by weight) in this copper-based binary alloy was quantified indirectly by means of the electronprobe at ASU. The fact that sputtered molecules Be n - 1 O n 2 - (with n = 4, 6) could be observed for ion bombardment and oxygen flooding of this fairly dilute Cu bulk alloy (with roughly ∼20 at.% Be) suggests that Be might be enriched at the oxidized Cu(Be) surface due to preferential sputtering of Cu or other mechanisms.

    • The gas-phase pentamer Be 2 O 3 2 - has been calculated by Boldyrev and Simons [26]. Its molecular structure has been predicted to be linear. However, it is not clear, if it is sufficiently stable to allow detection by mass spectrometry. The triatomic dianion BeO 2 2 - has been shown to be unstable with respect to electron tunneling loss [26]. To our knowledge, the heptamer Be 3 O 4 2 - has not yet been calculated.

    • + secondary ion signals, we estimate the Mg impurity concentration to be roughly 0.02 at.%. It is not known if Mg might be enriched at the oxidized Cu(Be) surface due to preferential sputtering or other processes.
