The reasons for the lack of a gender poverty gap are complex and include the structure of the household, women's labor market position, and the relative generosity of old age benefits in Hungary.

Hitting bottom: Homelessness, poverty, and masculinity
-
Michael S. Kimmel and Michael A. Messner, eds., (Boston: Allyn & Bacon)
-
Timothy Nonn, in his study of poor San Francisco men, notes that the men in the street develop coping mechanisms, "alternative masculinities," to provide them "with a sense of self-worth." These include, aside from displays of hypermasculinity and aggression, expressions of caring and honesty, as well as structuring values around the concept of "respect." While these are not purely destructive strategies, nevertheless, the men in Nonn's study are in a special situation: almost none are married, many are homeless, and all are family-less. See Timothy Nonn, "Hitting Bottom: Homelessness, Poverty, and Masculinity," in Michael S. Kimmel and Michael A. Messner, eds., Men's Lives (Boston: Allyn & Bacon, 2001), 242-51.

The unemployment rate has been higher for men than women since the early 1990s in Hungary, a fact partially explained by the overwhelming loss of jobs in male-dominated heavy industries. See Fodor, "The Feminization of Poverty."

Initially, we expected significant differences between gender relations and roles in Roma and non-Roma households, but we found practically none. Nevertheless, the inclusion of Roma is important because this group is often omitted from surveys, and Roma are indeed far more impoverished than non-Roma Hungarians.

There were two exceptions when men managed or had significant control over the family income. One man retained significant sums to be spent for his own needs ("Sometimes I have some extra money. If I make an extra 5,000 forints a month, then I spend it myself. Sometimes on my own needs ... that's a little extra, you know." (110ml) and one case when it was separately managed - a second marriage for both.
