Demand for anti-retroviral drugs to reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV resulted in a 2001 Constitutional Court ruling for government provision. Of all the available anti-retrovirals, the drug Nevirapine, given to HIV + pregnant women in a once-off dosage shortly before giving birth, has been shown to reduce the likelihood of mother-to-child transmission of HIV by about 30 per cent.
